Cowley Club

January 2005

A three week community mosaic based in Brighton's Cowley club. Howard was invited along by Nicola Benge who organised the project.

The Cowley Club itself functions in a co-operative manner and the brief of the artists was to reflect this. Nobody at the club gets paid for anything they do, everyone is a volunteer. To visit the place, follow the above link. They serve really good, cheap food at lunch time, so if you visit then you're in for a double treat of full stomach and an ace mosaic to see.

Over 40 people worked on the project, all volunteers and 95% of the tiles were donated. The Cowley Club itself covered the cost of the wood and screws.

The volunteers by the way, were fantastic coming back day after day in spite of the freezing conditions. Also the work they did was stunning, being both beautiful and creative. Some of the volunteers are now planning their own bottle top mosaic project in the summer which is very exciting.

Howard and Nicky say thanks to everyone involved! It couldn't have been done without you.

Note the extra layers of clothing as it was absolutely freezing!

Sorting out the scrabble letters.

The walls were made up of horsehair and pebbles so some ingenious methods of fixing the mosaic were used.
